SUNDAY SCHOOL OUTLINE FOR SUNDAY 15 FEBRUARY, 2026

THEME: THE CHURCH AND HER TEACHINGS
TOPIC: RHYTHMS OF REST AND WORK
TEXT: EXODUS 20: 8-11, ROMANS 14:4-6 & REV.1:10

GOLDEN TEXT:
For in six days, the LORD made heavens and earth, the sea and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Exodus 20:11

OBJECTIVES: For class members to be able to:
- explain their understanding of the Sabbath and the importance of rest to them as Christians
- express their decision to value rest in their lives

INTRODUCTION

Today’s study about the rhythms of work and rest will teach us how God invites us into a deliberate pattern of regular rest, a period intended for renewal and restoration. We will also discover that rest offers opportunities to intentionally deepen our relationship with God.

THE LESSON EXPLAINED

A. Honour The Sabbath - Exodus 20: 8-11

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy v.8. This instruction is not merely about refraining from work but it emphasizes a holistic understanding of rest physically and spiritually. The Sabbath serves as a reminder of God’s creative ability and the rest on the seventh day (Gen.2:3).

Sabbath has spiritual and physical implications for us as contemporary Christians. It is to enable us to pause our daily tasks and reflect on our relationship with God. Physically, the Sabbath recognizes the human need for rest and renewal. Dedicating time for rest promotes better physical and emotional health.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. What is the significance of the Sabbath for believers today?
2. Is physical and mental rest necessary for the believer? If yes, how should it be handled?

B. Freedom from Human Opinion - Romans 14:4-6

In the text, Apostle Paul was addressing a conflict within the Roman church about rest and food. He emphasized that each believer is ultimately accountable to God and should not judge one another’s choices. When Christians avoid judging each other, they can rest from unnecessary stress and division.

As believers, we must not base our lives on other people’s beliefs and convictions; so that we can consistently focus on our relationship with God. An environment where people feel safe to share their convictions should be created. Such atmosphere will foster the spirit of collaboration rather than division.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. What other non-essential issues cause unrest and division in the church today?
2. How can the church address the issues mentioned above to avoid distractions and division?

C. Solitary Rest - Rev. 1:10

Solitary rest is a period of being alone and taking time to relax and rejuvenate. It is a time for reflection, self discovery and recess from the demands of the usual daily interactions and responsibilities.

John the Beloved had this kind of rest on the Island called Patmos during his imprisonment due to persecution from the Roman government, (v.9) this solitary rest characterized by the Lord’s day (v.12) suggests a sacred time set apart for fellowshipping with God. His encounter in this moment of isolation shows how solitude can lead to profound spiritual revelations.

As contemporary Christians, solitary rest is crucial for our spiritual growth and renewal. Taking intentional solitude will allow us to reflect on our relationship with God, gain more insights and revelation and seek divine guidance.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. What are some of the challenges Christian face when it comes to finding time for solitary rest in today’s fast-paced world?
2. In what ways can solitude enhance our ability to hear from God?
3. How has being alone with God impacted your prayer life or time spent in worship?

CONCLUSION

The need for a deliberate pattern of regular rest which is a period intended for renewal and restoration cannot be over emphasized. We should therefore commit ourselves to practising quality rest as individuals, families and a group of believers..

THEME: THE CHURCH AND HER TEACHINGS
TOPIC :OUTER EXPRESSIONS OF INNER TRUTHS
TEXT: Mathew 3:13-17; 28:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-29

GOLDEN TEXT:
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20.

INTRODUCTION

Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are outer expressions of inner spiritual truths. Baptism symbolizes a transformative journey, marking death to old selves and new birth in faith. The Lord’s Supper acknowledges Christ’s sacrifice for redemption. These practices convey deeper meanings, intertwining faith and Christ’s love. They represent transformative truths defining our spiritual journey.

THE LESSON EXPLAINED

A. The Inner Truth of Jesus’ Baptism Matthew 3:13-17

Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist marks the start of His public ministry showing His identification with humanity. It symbolizes Jesus as the bridge between God and humanity, not repentance because Jesus did not have any sin to repent from. God affirms Jesus as His beloved Son, empowering Him for ministry. Believers are called to a covenant relationship through baptism, declaring faith and identifying with Christ. Baptism invites us to embrace our identity as God’s children, reflecting His love.

DISCUSSION TIME
(i) What is the expression of baptism and its inner truth?
(ii) How can the Church help her members understand the truth of baptism and appropriate its benefits for their lives as believers?

B. The Inner Truth of the Great Commission Matthew 28:18-20

In this text often referred to as the Great Commission, Jesus mandates His disciples to share the gospel with every nation. This commission is backed by Jesus’ authority over heaven and earth. Baptism is the entry point into the Christian community, symbolizing public identification with Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection. Present day disciples are called to nurture committed members, mentor others and create spaces for faith discussions. We must be baptized and encourage others to do same, projecting commitment to discipleship.

DISCUSSION TIME
(i) How do you view the significance of baptism in the process of becoming a disciple?
(ii) What does it mean for the Church to embody a holistic approach to spreading the gospel?
(iii) Can your Church integrate this understanding into her outreach effort?

C. The Inner Truth of the Lord’s Supper 1 Corinthians 11:23-29

The Lord’s Supper is the second ordinance observed by the Baptist as commanded by the Lord Jesus. It is a sacred meal symbolizing Christ’s sacrifice and covenant with believers. It involves bread and cup, representing Jesus body and blood. Partaking in it commemorates Jesus’ death and proclaims it until he returns. Believers must approach it with reverence, self examination and humility. It fosters unity, love and service among participants.

THEME: THE CHURCH AND HER TEACHINGS
TOPIC: WORKING TOGETHER MAKES US BETTER
TEXT: Mark 4:26-32; Ephesians 4:4-6, 11-18

GOLDEN TEXT:
Indeed, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of Him who is the head, that is Christ. From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love as each part does its work. Ephesians 4:15-16.

OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, class members should be able to;
• Explain the relationship between growing in Christian unity and maturity by providing biblical and/or personal examples.
• Promise to promote unity in the Church through their spiritual gifts.
• Write out all the spiritual gifts mentioned in the passage without checking the Bible.

INTRODUCTION

A complete orchestra generally has over a hundred members led by a single director. It consists of a large number of instruments like violins, cellos, harps etc. There is also a great cast of human voices, male and female like baritone, tenor, alto added to the mix. All of these varying parts work together to make a harmonious and melodious music. All these also under the direction of one person in order to bring out the fullness of the composer’s idea. Like the beauty of the orchestra, Ephesians 4:11-18 reminds us of the need to use our God-given gifts for the growth and harmony of the Church.

THE LESSON EXPLAINED

A. Faith and Growth in the Kingdom - Mark 4:26-32

The parables found in Mark 4:26-32 conveys compelling lessons about the kingdom’s nature and growth. They emphasize God’s sovereignty and the transformative power of faith. We are to have faith in God’s ability to bring forth growth and transformation even with small beginnings. Trust that your acts of kindness, love, and service can lead to enormous transformations and keep using your gifts for the kingdom. As we play our part in sharing the gospel, only God determines the outcome and timing. Small beginnings like the mustard seed can lead to significant growth and impact. Trust in God’s power and be faithful even when you don’t see immediate results.

DISCUSSION
(i) What are some challenges Christians face in waiting for spiritual growth either in their lives or the lives of those around them?
(ii) How can we remain patient and hopeful during waiting periods?

THEME: GRACE AND RECONCILIATION
TOPIC: CHRISTIAN GROWTH
TEXT: MATTHEW 4:18-20, 16:16-18, JOHN 21:15-18; 2 PETER 3:14-15,18

GOLDEN TEXT:
The third time He said to him, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love me? ‘Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ He said, Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed my sheep.’ John 21:17.

OBJECTIVES:
 Compare Peter’s struggles and victories in following Jesus to their experience of struggle or victories as Christians.
 Reflect on the impact of Jesus’ call on their lives and express a commitment to follow Him more closely as His disciples.
 List three activities that will help them grow in their faith.

INTRODUCTION

Christian growth is a journey marked by both failures and triumphs, as exemplified in Peter’s life. Despite His bold declaration of loyalty, he denied Jesus three times during His trial. However, after Jesus resurrection, He lovingly restored Peter, reaffirmed his calling and commissioned him to feed his sheep. This restoration highlights the essence of Christian growth, perseverance in our spiritual walk, acknowledge our shortcoming, seeking forgiveness and allowing God’s grace to renew and strengthen us.

THE LESSON EXPLAINED

A. TRANSFORMATION THROUGH FOLLOWING JESUS (MATT. 4:18-20, 16:16-18)

Repentance is a command and it is not optional. Acts 17: 30 – 31. It involves turning or changing one’s mind. Acts 26:20. Indeed, true repentance attracts forgiveness. Jesus emphasized this in the parable of the prodigal son.
• A harsh, shocking and selfish request. Verses 11 – 12
• A hard reality of sin. Verse 13
• The reality of sin’s price. Verse 14
• Consequences of sin. Verses 15 – 16
• The beginning of repentance. Verses 17 – 20a
• A happy reunion. Verses 20b – 24 As Christians, we should reflect on the areas where we might need to seek forgiveness – whether from God or from those we have wronged. Our forgiving lifestyle will lead to peace and restoration in the home, church and society.

DISCUSSION TIME
1. What role does humility play in seeking forgiveness?
2. How can we apply the Prodigal son’s father’s example of forgiveness in our relationship, especially when dealing with those who have wronged us?

B. A CALL TO REPENTANCE - ACTS 2: 38 - 39

Repentance is not just a mere apologizing or seeking forgiveness. To repent means to stop and think again. The journey of faith begins with repentance. It is the starting point for anyone wishing to enter into a relationship with God. Repentance is essential to taking our rightful place in the family of God. Peter, one of the Apostles also affirms that repentance is crucial to gaining access to God’s kingdom. When repentance and faith are joined together in a believer’s life, he or she has fundamentals of sanctifications. Also, when we repent of our sins, we must turn in faith to Christ alone for salvation.

DISCUSSION TIME
1. How can we know genuine repentance has taken place in a person’s life?
2. What are some practical ways to share the message of repentance with others?

CONCLUSION

We are called to continuous repentance, to keep turning away from our sins and the false promises of this world, and to turn back to God with all our hearts.

INTRODUCTION

Last week study helped us to understand the significance of honesty about our sins and transformative impact of God’s light in the lives of those who believe. This week, we are going to be looking at the importance of genuine repentance and faith. How these two virtues can transform our lives, nurture our relationship and deepen our commitment. It is easy to think repentance is something only lost people must do in order to be saved. Actually, repentance is also a call to Christians who have drifted into disobedience or sinful selfishness.
